Real experiences from drivers who chose to slow down.

The School Run That Changed Everything

Sarah, a parent from Bristol, never thought much about speed until she was driving at 25mph in her residential street one morning. A football bounced into the road, followed immediately by a 7-year-old boy. She braked hard and stopped with less than a metre to spare.

"I wasn't even going 30mph, but I still almost didn't stop in time. Now I stick to 20mph on any street where children might be. Those extra few seconds of reaction time could save a life – possibly my own child's when someone else is driving."

A Community Transformation

When Hackney introduced a borough-wide 20mph limit in 2014, local resident James was skeptical. "I thought it would just make my commute longer," he admits.

Three years later, he'd changed his mind completely. "I noticed kids playing out more, people cycling more confidently, and neighbours actually chatting on the street because it felt safer. The council reported a 45% drop in serious casualties.

"Yes, my drive takes an extra two minutes, but I can live with that when I see children walking to school safely."

The Near-Miss That Wasn't

David, a delivery driver in Manchester, describes a moment that stuck with him: "I was doing exactly 20mph through a residential zone – honestly, only because there'd been a speed camera van there the week before. A woman stepped out from between parked cars, didn't see me at all. I stopped comfortably with room to spare.

"My mate who drives the same route later said he'd have hit her for sure at the 30mph he normally does. Made me realize that 'getting there faster' means nothing if you don't get there at all."
